On April 9, 2025, China announced an additional 84% tariff on all U.S. imports, a move that followed President Trump’s earlier imposition of a 104% tariff on Chinese goods. In retaliation, President Trump further increased tariffs on Chinese products to 125%, citing China’s “lack of respect” for global markets. He conveyed this decision via his social media platform, Truth Social, emphasizing the unsustainability of China’s trade practices.

Despite the escalating trade tensions, President Trump commended Chinese President Xi Jinping during remarks at the Oval Office. He described Xi as “one of the smartest people in the world” and expressed optimism about reaching a favorable trade agreement.

In a notable aside, President Trump alluded to the United States possessing “weapons that nobody even knows about.” While he did not elaborate on the nature of these weapons, the comment has sparked speculation regarding U.S. military capabilities and strategic intentions amid the trade dispute.

Amid the U.S.-China tariff exchanges, President Trump announced a 90-day pause on tariff increases for other countries. This decision applies to nations that have refrained from imposing retaliatory tariffs against the United States. Trump noted that over 75 countries had engaged with U.S. representatives to negotiate trade issues, leading to this temporary reprieve.
